The Earl of Sandwich

*This post includes a new camera. Long overdue.

In the 18th century John Mantagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, had his servants bring him meat between two slices of bread so that he could continue playing cards rather than taking a meal break from his gambling. While in America we have the good taste to outlaw aristocracy, we still appreciate the resourcefulness of the act. So here is our tribute to Johnny boy.

First, get yourself an aristocratic-looking piece of bread. Something that says, "I inherited everything I own." We have chosen a loaf of Pugliese bread. Actually, we picked it for the little pockets that the mayo can hide in. Observe:

Next, we put a light bit of mayo on the bottom. Just enough to moisten the bread, like so:

Now we put a layer of ham down. I cannot stress enough that quality of ingredients is paramount. We have gone with a nice deli-style ham off the bone.

After the ham, we have chosen a nice Tillamook Cheddar.

Now, while Lord Montagu may not have asked for vegetables in his sandwich, we feel that His Lordship may have profited from some roughage, so it's going in there. We start with some nice baby spinach.

Aaaaand back to the meat. Now we take some nice pan-roasted turkey. Gobble gobble.

Topped with some Tillamook Swiss. Because turkey and swiss belong together.

Just in case this was getting monotonous, here is where it starts to get interesting. We have taken strips of English cucumber and placed them here for a nice crunch. Why not pickles, you ask? Because I hate them.

Now this might make for a nice sandwich right here, but because this is a tribute to outdated aristocracy, we'd better fancy it up a bit. How about some prosciutto?

Good, good. And some more cheese. Something tasty, but obnoxious. Muenster!

DSCN0039.JPG

A bit heavy handed, I know, but this is a tribute to English peerage. So, just so it can claim to have something in common with the working-class, let's give a light dusting of sprouts. Everybody loves sprouts. We have chosen clover and alfalfa.

Now put a light layer of mayo on the top bread and put together your sandwich! Our enormous monument to the system of government we left behind:

And the obligatory shot of the inside, because we believe in government transparency:
