Dennistoun Barbeque

So let’s talk barbeque. Once you leave Murrica, you find that word means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Here in Glasgow it can mean anything from late-night Indian food to baby-back ribs. So when a local friend offered to take some of us to the East End to show us one of his favorite barbeque spots, I decided what the hell. I’d recently been disappointed by some faux American barbeque, and it couldn’t be any worse.

We arrived by cab out of the pouring rain (because Scotland) and crossed the street to Dennistoun Barbeque. It advertised that it was open 8 days a week. That’s a good start. We got inside and it looked… like your standard ma and pa barbeque joint back home. And the smell! I could see the burgers on the grill, and the pulled pork sandwiches being prepared at the counter. I became quite optimistic, especially after seeing they had A&W Rootbeer for sale (seriously a rarity in the UK, they haven’t had rootbeer anywhere I’ve been to on this island or the other one). The sign behind the counter:

I looked on the menu for the ribs (because ribs) and almost choked on my own spit. They had something called “Nutella Ribs.” I had to walk over to the counter and confirm that it was exactly what it sounded like. It was. Well shit, I had to try them at least. I ordered a half rack of them, a half rack of the regular, and a side of mac and cheese. We then waltzed over to our enormous table, with a picture of this familiar face behind us:

And because I couldn’t stop thinking about it every time I saw the picture, here’s a small historical documentary on the history of our beloved first president. I’d warn you that it’s not safe for work, but who am I kidding? If you’re among my readership you already suspect that:

So anywho, here’s an absolutely shit picture of our amazing food, all the way around the table. Look at the size of some of them sandwiches!! That’s our local boy, Fraser, on the left. Special thanks to Leah, on the right, for finding the Washington video.

And here’s a photo of Cassondra’s ribs and fries, complete with Murrican rootbeer:

I, of course, didn't think to photograph my food. Because of reasons. I can’t even use words to describe the Nutella ribs. They were almost like a chocolate meat dessert, but not. Because that would be gross. They were delicious barbeque ribs, with a lovely hint of Nutella. And I want them again. I really did enjoy the ribs, but I didn’t know when I’d get to come back, so I got a pulled pork sandwich after, and it was phenomenal. Dennistoun Barbeque can count on my return.
